Dear Flight Attendants,
A new PBS Feature: Waive Default Maximum Workblock – is now available! SIA is pleased to announce that beginning with the November bid (available on October 10th) Flight Attendants will have the “Waive Default Maximum Work Block” option available in the “Line Properties” of PBS. Please refer to the information below for complete information about this feature.
Thank you,
Your SIA Team
NEW PBS Property: Waive Default Maximum Workblock
By default, PBS can only build work blocks between one and six days long. A work block is any combination of pairings without a day off in between (i.e. six locals, three 2-days, two 3-days etc.). Work blocks are limited to a maximum of six days to comply with FARs. The FAR requires Flight Attendants to have a 24 hour period free from any duty in any consecutive seven days. PBS is set up to look for at least one calendar day off in any consecutive seven days for Flight Attendants to meet this requirement. This calendar day off ensures that no Flight Attendant will be awarded more than six days in a row without at least one day off in base.
If bid, the new “Waive Default Maximum Work Block” line property allows PBS to award work blocks greater than six consecutive days. PBS will still be required to comply with all FAR requirements
(24 hours off in seven days). However, if this property is bid, PBS will look for a 25 hour rest period (24 hours for FAR limits plus a one hour buffer) in any seven days.
How does it work?
If the “Waive Default Maximum Work Block” is bid, PBS will look for the required rest either within pairings or between consecutive pairings. For example, PBS can use a layover of 25 hours or greater within a pairing to satisfy the rest requirement. Or PBS may also use a period of 25 hours or greater in base between pairings to satisfy the rest requirement. If you choose to bid the “Waive Default Maximum Work Block” property please be aware PBS could possibly award 19 consecutive days of work as long as it can find the 25 hour required rest. The PBS defaults such as “maximum work blocks” are in place to protect the bidder, so please use caution when waiving this or any default.
This property is intended to be a great benefit for Flight Attendants who desire large work blocks, or perhaps want to fly as many hours as possible in one work block. This should be extremely helpful for commuting Flight Attendants with these preferences, as long as the property is used correctly. For further information on this property, please refer to the article on the PBS Homepage of SkyWest Online titled “Waive Default Maximum Work Block”. If you are interested in utilizing this option but are still unsure of how it will affect your bid award please refer to the PBS User Guide, ask PBS through the online chat, or contact the PBS Helpline.
